This is a list of terms that I think are particularly important with respect to the themes of this course. The ID questions on the final exam will be drawn from this list; moreover, the items on this list constitute useful evidence for the kinds of arguments that you will be asked to make in your term paper and in the essay portion of the final exam.
This list will be drawn from the lectures, the textbook and the primary source readings. You should use this list as a study guide. Make sure you have complete command of the defining details for the items on the list (date, place and other elements of their historical context), and be able to express with some precision the historical significance of each item.
For this list to serve as a useful study tool, you should edit it and reorganize it to suit your interests and your understanding of the course materials. You should add items to the list that you think are of particular significance or that can serve as useful evidence. You should note where particular items are relevant in more than one context. For example, you might note that the inscription of Darius I at Behistun is relevant in the context of the archaic sacral norm — Darius's relations with his god — but you might also note that the inscription is relevant as the 'Persian Rosetta stone' in the context of cuneiform and other ancient writing systems. Be prepared to let the evidence at your command serve more than one purpose depending on the context.
